Latest Apple News, Vision Pro’s Submerged Debuts, and Zelda’s Epic New Puzzle Adventure

In this episode of Basic AF, Tom and Jeff cover a mix of Apple news, including minor OS updates, Apple’s immersive content plans for Vision Pro, and Submerged, Apple’s first short film for the Vision Pro. They also touch on Jeff’s new obsession—The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom on the Nintendo Switch.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • No Apple Ring in Sight (for Now): Jeff reacts to a report by Mark Gurman suggesting that Apple currently has no plans for a smart ring. Though it’s not official, Jeff shares his disappointment, having hoped for a wearable alternative to the Apple Watch.
  • OS Updates and Battery Issues: The hosts discuss iPadOS 18.0.1 and watchOS 11.0.1, focusing on battery performance and the quirks of living with beta software. Notably, iPadOS 18 is now available again for the iPad Pro M4 after being temporarily pulled due to issues with bricking devices.
  • Apple Vision Pro’s First Short Film: Tom dives into his experience with Submerged, the first short film for Apple’s Vision Pro. He describes the immersive World War II setting, where a submarine crew faces a torpedo attack, and shares his thoughts on the stunning visual details. Tom also notes how some close-up shots felt uncomfortably realistic in the Vision Pro, almost placing him in the characters’ personal space. The movement inside the sub was impressive but occasionally unsettling, with fast dolly shots that made the immersive experience intense. Despite these quirks, Tom found the film visually captivating and hints at how future VR films could push boundaries even further.
  • Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom: Jeff gushes over his new favorite game on the Nintendo Switch, though he has no ability to remember the name of said game, therefore making up some other game that doesn't exist. (The Legend of Zelda: Heroes of the Kingdom? Sure, whatever you say, Jeff.) In The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, the true and actual name of the game, players take on the role of Zelda instead of Link, solving puzzles and exploring vibrant environments.
  • New Apple Focus Features: Jeff gives a rundown on Apple’s new “reduce interruptions” focus feature, explaining how it intelligently manages notifications to help reduce distractions.

out. There were a few things in that the one that I was paying closest attention to were the they said some battery improvements were coming. I've not seen much improvement with mine. And I asked on threads how people were doing with that. And it's odd. So I think it it's some type of a combination of apps and complications and the way people are using these things or something. But some people say yeah, battery life's great. Others Yeah, I haven't seen much improvement. So that's still a work in progress.

Jeff Battersby (4m 4s)

Mm-hmm, mm-mm.

Jeff Battersby (4m 26s)

Yeah. And I'm on betas, so I can't really speak to reality because betas are never good battery wise.

Jeff Battersby (4m 33s)

Um, I am on all the betas and I can tell you that all my battery life sucks.

Jeff Battersby (4m 39s)

Um, it's just the nature of it.

Jeff Battersby (4m 42s)

I am charging my watch usually when I sit down to watch right now, the playoffs.

Jeff Battersby (4m 49s)

Um, but it, it sucks. My phone guaranteed. I need.

Jeff Battersby (4m 56s)

It's plugged in right now, thank goodness, because, uh, it's, it, it, it would be dead.

Jeff Battersby (5m 3s)

So that's a thing, but again, you know, that's my fault for being on betas.

Tom Anderson (5m 5s)

Beta life.

Tom Anderson (5m 7s)

Yeah.

Jeff Battersby (5m 7s)

Exactly. Correct.

Tom Anderson (5m 8s)

Yep, and speaking of betas.

Jeff Battersby (5m 9s)

I will say I am liking Apple intelligence though.

Apple Intelligence Betas

Jeff Battersby (5m 12s)

Um, so far so good, except for it's not, it's still kind of Siri E.

Tom Anderson (5m 15s)

Hmm.

Jeff Battersby (5m 19s)

Um, it's not quite as intelligent as intelligent.

Tom Anderson (5m 19s)

Yeah, Siri hasn't gotten much love yet.

Tom Anderson (5m 22s)

That's coming up.

Tom Anderson (5m 23s)

The real, I think, stuff's coming up later.

Jeff Battersby (5m 27s)

Yep. Yep. Mm-hmm. Yes.

Tom Anderson (5m 29s)

Dot one updates will be the first with Apple Intelligence for iOS, iPadOS, macOS.

Tom Anderson (5m 38s)

Right.

Tom Anderson (5m 40s)

So that's expected.

Tom Anderson (5m 41s)

It looks like sometime around the end of this month,

Tom Anderson (5m 43s)

so towards the end of October.

Jeff Battersby (5m 47s)

I will say that other than the battery life,

Jeff Battersby (5m 48s)

the betas are solid.

Jeff Battersby (5m 50s)

I have not had any, well, it's not entirely true.

Jeff Battersby (5m 55s)

Right before the most recent update, I did have it.

Jeff Battersby (5m 58s)

And I thought my phone was bricked.

Jeff Battersby (6m)

It wasn't.

Jeff Battersby (6m 1s)

It just took a long, long time to restart.

Jeff Battersby (6m 4s)

But they've been pretty solid.

Jeff Battersby (6m 8s)

I'm pleased.

Jeff Battersby (6m 9s)

I've got it on everything, really.

Jeff Battersby (6m 11s)

All my devices have the latest beta,

Jeff Battersby (6m 13s)

except for this Mac mini at the present moment

Tom Anderson (6m 18s)

There you go.

Tom Anderson (6m 19s)

Yeah, so I've got betas on my work laptop.

Tom Anderson (6m 22s)

So I've got the 15.1 and I've got iPadOS 18.1 on my iPad.

Tom Anderson (6m 29s)

Yeah, but so far, good.

Tom Anderson (6m 30s)

Like, you know, it's still the whole thing with this Apple intelligence is it's a long journey, right?

Tom Anderson (6m 39s)

So they're throwing out a couple of things for us here at the end of this month and some more stuff maybe towards the end of the year, early next year.

Tom Anderson (6m 46s)

And then I think it.

Tom Anderson (6m 48s)

It looks like, of course, Apple doesn't give you really the dates, but it looks like the big Siri improvements that we're looking for, where it starts to have that personal context and know about what's on your device and your data.

Tom Anderson (6m 58s)

I think that's a springtime thing, it looks like.

Jeff Battersby (7m 2s)

Yeah, yeah. The thing that I will tell you doesn't work with the betas, at least right now is the, you know, they, they were touting the ability for Siri to be able to retain or Apple intelligence to be able to retain the context of what you're doing.

Jeff Battersby (7m 20s)

It doesn't work right now. In other words, you know you say,

Jeff Battersby (7m 26s)

you know, give directions to grandma's house. And, you know, it says little red riding hood. Here you go. And then you say, oh, I'm sorry.

Jeff Battersby (7m 32s)

Wait, can you do me a favor and add stop at the grocery store to pick up apples for grandma and that's supposed to be working that does not work yet. That's not a thing. So that's in future Apple intelligence.

Tom Anderson (7m 41s)

Right.

Tom Anderson (7m 45s)

Future Siri, still Siri for at least a while longer.

Jeff Battersby (7m 50s)

Siri still making me cry.

Tom Anderson (7m 51s)

Yeah.

Tom Anderson (7m 52s)

Yeah.

Tom Anderson (7m 53s)

Um, last bit of news here.

AppleTV+ on Amazon Prime Video

Tom Anderson (7m 55s)

Apple TV plus is coming to Amazon prime video as an add on subscription.

Tom Anderson (8m)

That is kind of unexpected.

Jeff Battersby (8m 3s)

Yeah. But you know what? Super smart. I think. Um, I think it's a great idea. Uh, the question is, I wish, I don't know. I have both presently. I would love for there to be a way for me to, you know, I had like a couple of shows on, uh, like the boys on Amazon prime. I wish I could get that over on my Apple TV account. I could get rid of Amazon prime, but I don't

Tom Anderson (8m 30s)

Right. Probably at this point, I think it is.

Jeff Battersby (8m 33s)

Is this worse than cable might be worse than cable. Yeah. It's too many. Everything's,

Jeff Battersby (8m 41s)

you know, I'll, I'll complain about this. This is general streaming complaint, but I have, uh, I have, I can't remember which one it is right now. Paramount plus or, or, uh,

Jeff Battersby (8m 52s)

the peacock app to be able to watch the premier league. And guess what? You can't see all the games. You can only see the games.

Jeff Battersby (9m 3s)

They've decided to give you when I say all the games like there are a bunch of NBC games that are say it's it is the

Jeff Battersby (9m 10s)

the peacock out NBC's, you know got them. So if I want to

Jeff Battersby (9m 16s)

Subscribe to the NBC app or whatever the heck that's called. I can see the other games that I can't see a peacock, dude

Jeff Battersby (9m 22s)

I'm paying you already. Just give me the games I--

Tom Anderson (9m 25s)

And does Peacock do like a local market thing, and you only get to see what's in your local market for that?

Tom Anderson (9m 30s)

Or is it just they just don't have them like?

Jeff Battersby (9m 32s)

No, they don't. They don't have the games. And it's not like the other one I think allows you to stream, you know, live your local live NBC affiliate or something like that. I can't do that on with Peacock. But, you know, come on, you got Premier League. Let me have the Premier League games. I want to see them.

Tom Anderson (9m 47s)

Yeah, yeah, I dipped into that in Apple TV app the other day on the Vision Pro. We're gonna talk about that in a minute. But to look at what was it? Baseball game, maybe something something they had, I can't remember what it was. And they were like, Oh,

Tom Anderson (10m 2s)

watch it on peacock. I was like, Okay, let's see what that experience is like. Oh, then it was like, enter your provider.

Tom Anderson (10m 7s)

Do this. Do that. Yeah, I'm out. It's don't care enough to do that. I don't have a provider as part of the problem. It's like,

Jeff Battersby (10m 14s)

Yeah, well that's

Tom Anderson (10m 14s)

I can't do anything.

Jeff Battersby (10m 16s)

So the alternative is you you get the you know, you get the app and you do the seven days subscription

Tom Anderson (10m 17s)

Great.

Tom Anderson (10m 20s)

Right.

Jeff Battersby (10m 23s)

You know free one so you could try it out

Tom Anderson (10m 24s)

Yeah, that's what I did to watch the Super Bowl on the Vision Pro last year.

Jeff Battersby (10m 27s)

Yeah

Tom Anderson (10m 29s)

Earlier this year, rather.

Tom Anderson (10m 30s)

Yeah, it's kind of dumb.

Jeff Battersby (10m 32s)

Yep, yep too many places to spend your money

Tom Anderson (10m 33s)

Yep.

Tom Anderson (10m 36s)

Yeah.

Tom Anderson (10m 37s)

Yeah, they've made us all wish we had bundling again,

Jeff Battersby (10m 38s)

Frankly Scarlett

Tom Anderson (10m 41s)

which is a remarkable feat.

Tom Anderson (10m 43s)

Just goes to show you how much those companies suck.

Jeff Battersby (10m 46s)

Yeah, well, everybody's trying to get a dime, so, all right.

Tom Anderson (10m 47s)

Well done. Mm-hm. So speaking of the Apple Vision Pro, Apple just today released its,

Jeff Battersby (10m 53s)

Yes, sir.

Jeff Battersby (10m 56s)

Mm-hmm.

Jeff Battersby (10m 57s)

Today, as of this recording, because we're recording differently than we normally do,

Tom Anderson (10m 58s)

today as of this recording, yeah. Thank you, Jeff. Yes. Yes, we are on a Thursday.

Jeff Battersby (11m 2s)

I've got a wedding to go to this weekend.

Tom Anderson (11m 4s)

Yes. Congratulations to the bride and groom.

Jeff Battersby (11m 5s)

Yeah.

Jeff Battersby (11m 6s)

Thank you very much.

Tom Anderson (11m 10s)

Submerged, their first short film for Vision Pro. So.

Tom Anderson (11m 17s)

That came out today as we record, as he said. So Thursday, October 10th,

Tom Anderson (11m 20s)

this is something we've been railing about here, and lots of other people I have too,

Jeff Battersby (11m 24s)

Railing.

Tom Anderson (11m 25s)

is, "Hey, we're waiting for some content. Where's the content? Give us the content."

Jeff Battersby (11m 25s)

Mhm.

Tom Anderson (11m 29s)

So they did. And I did watch that today, and I'm going to share some thoughts on that

Jeff Battersby (11m 29s)

Mhm.

Jeff Battersby (11m 35s)

Mhm.

Tom Anderson (11m 35s)

now. So if you don't want to know anything about this show, for you three people who have Vision Pros that are listening, as part of our audience, like I know there's more people than three that vision pros. Maybe jump ahead, we've got chapter...

Jeff Battersby (11m 40s)

Yeah.

Tom Anderson (11m 47s)

this section. You can do that. So anyway, before we get into the actual submerged thing,

Details on More Vision Pro Content

Tom Anderson (11m 55s)

they did announce some new content coming as well, because that's kind of, they've,

Tom Anderson (11m 59s)

they seem to slowly kind of be getting this content thing ramped up. So next Friday,

Tom Anderson (12m 7s)

which would be October 18th, Apple plans to have another short film released, which is more of the 2024 NBA All-Star.

Jeff Battersby (12m 13s)

Mm-hmm.

Tom Anderson (12m 17s)

Footage they did last year, they did do like some of that in like one of those short clips they had, the sizzle reels.

Jeff Battersby (12m 19s)

Okay.

Jeff Battersby (12m 24s)

Mm-hmm.

Tom Anderson (12m 25s)

So they've got that coming up and in November, basketball game, right?

Jeff Battersby (12m 27s)

Because everybody wants to watch a year-old NBA All-Star game.

Tom Anderson (12m 31s)

Yeah, that's wild.

Jeff Battersby (12m 32s)

I'm sorry. Go ahead.

Tom Anderson (12m 32s)

Yeah, I don't know why they're doing this, but that's what they've got.

Tom Anderson (12m 37s)

They've got a thing coming up in November with The Weeknd for new album that he's got coming up.

Jeff Battersby (12m 43s)

That'll be cool. You got to do something with your vision, bro.

Tom Anderson (12m 44s)

Yeah.

Tom Anderson (12m 45s)

So, I mean, I'm going to watch them both.

Tom Anderson (12m 47s)

Let's just see what's like, um, I got to do something with that thing.

Tom Anderson (12m 51s)

Right.

Tom Anderson (12m 51s)

Uh, in December, the next episode of the adventure series, ice dive is going to be.

Tom Anderson (12m 58s)

There.

Tom Anderson (12m 58s)

So they're going to do that one.

Tom Anderson (13m 1s)

And then more of those in early 20, 25.

Tom Anderson (13m 4s)

So I think adventure.

Jeff Battersby (13m 4s)

Okay, so stuff's coming

Tom Anderson (13m 6s)

Yeah.

Tom Anderson (13m 6s)

The adventure one, I think they started off with the, uh, uh, the lady that walked across the tight rope between the mountain edges that I created.

Jeff Battersby (13m 13s)

Yeah, yeah, alright. The thing that scared you to death even though it was fake.

Tom Anderson (13m 14s)

That was too much.

Tom Anderson (13m 15s)

Yeah, it did.

Tom Anderson (13m 15s)

And when I looked at it, I was like, "Geez."

Tom Anderson (13m 17s)

So a new series called "Concert for One" will be coming before the end of 2024.

Jeff Battersby (13m 26s)

A series, nice.

Tom Anderson (13m 26s)

So the series is what it says, you know,

Tom Anderson (13m 29s)

"Intimate performances from some of the world's biggest artists."

Jeff Battersby (13m 32s)

Cool. So it's going to be like you get Kendrick Lamar in your living room.

Tom Anderson (13m 39s)

don't know. We'll find out. Yeah. So at least it's ramping up.

Jeff Battersby (13m 42s)

Just for you. I'm down for it.

Jeff Battersby (13m 47s)

Okay. Eventually, we'll have content, right?

Tom Anderson (13m 49s)

So, right. Yes. Right. So you gave me the homework assignment

Jeff Battersby (13m 52s)

Okay.

Submerged Short Film

Tom Anderson (13m 55s)

for this episode.

Jeff Battersby (13m 56s)

I did, and I forced you to do it earlier so I could do something tomorrow instead of not being able to do something tomorrow.

Tom Anderson (14m 5s)

Yes.

Jeff Battersby (14m 5s)

And your homework assignment was Tom.

Tom Anderson (14m 7s)

It was to view this new short film, "Submerged."

Jeff Battersby (14m 10s)

Mm-hm, mm-hm.

Tom Anderson (14m 12s)

And I did.

Tom Anderson (14m 14s)

15 minutes, give or take, 17 something officially,

Tom Anderson (14m 16s)

if you throw the end credits.

Tom Anderson (14m 18s)

And I think there's a little short thing they put at the end on the behind the scenes,

Tom Anderson (14m 22s)

but dinner was ready, so I had to go.

Jeff Battersby (14m 24s)

Longest movie you've ever watched.

Tom Anderson (14m 24s)

I'll go back and look at that.

Jeff Battersby (14m 26s)

So kudos to you for sitting down and watching a movie.

Tom Anderson (14m 28s)

No, that is not true.

Tom Anderson (14m 31s)

That is not true.

Tom Anderson (14m 34s)

Longest one I've watched.

Tom Anderson (14m 35s)

No, I wouldn't even say on the Vision Pro, but.

Tom Anderson (14m 37s)

So, 17 minute movie.

Tom Anderson (14m 41s)

World War II setting, group of sailors that are on a submarine,

Tom Anderson (14m 45s)

and they get hit with a torpedo attack.

Jeff Battersby (14m 48s)

Mm-hmm okay is this the spoiler alert time now you're gonna tell us this

Tom Anderson (14m 48s)

That's all public info, so no spoilers there or anything.

Tom Anderson (14m 55s)

I already did spoiler alert, yeah,

Tom Anderson (14m 57s)

so if you wanna skip ahead still, skip ahead.

Tom Anderson (14m 59s)

I'm not really gonna get into the plot too much.

Tom Anderson (15m 2s)

I mean, it's 15 minutes.

Tom Anderson (15m 3s)

So how much pot can there be?

Tom Anderson (15m 5s)

Um, there's a torpedo attack.

Jeff Battersby (15m 6s)

Everything goes boom and there's water everywhere.

Tom Anderson (15m 7s)

That's the plot.

Tom Anderson (15m 8s)

Okay.

Tom Anderson (15m 9s)

Um, it did, it did.

Tom Anderson (15m 12s)

Um, but so kind of takeaways, some of the closeups were the movies, the films playing, you're watching, and then you've got a closeup of the character.

Tom Anderson (15m 24s)

That's just like a headshot, right?

Tom Anderson (15m 27s)

It's almost too close.

Tom Anderson (15m 31s)

It's like, dude, you're too

Jeff Battersby (15m 31s)

Really? laughs

Tom Anderson (15m 33s)

much into my space kind of thing.

Tom Anderson (15m 36s)

Like every single pore on the guy's face, you know, he's sweating because he's stressed out because of the situation going on in the movie.

Tom Anderson (15m 45s)

And so it's not uncomfortable because, I mean, it's just in the headset, but it it doesn't it's not

Tom Anderson (15m 53s)

normal, like you're not used to seeing a movie that way.

Tom Anderson (15m 56s)

Right. So it's usually the movie's on the TV. You sure you have close ups and things, but they're farther away.

Jeff Battersby (15m 57s)

Right.

Tom Anderson (16m 2s)

But this was like right in your.

Tom Anderson (16m 3s)

Face like dude is like if you breathe you in and you feel it and but some of those shots though the way they've have them set up like the depth of field so the background it does not seem really natural because I guess just the way that has to be shot with the equipment they have I did like in the vision pro to date I've not had any issues with like motion sickness queasiness because of you know looking around and all that kind of stuff even with

Tom Anderson (16m 33s)

some of the other immersive stuff but they do have a scene or two in this one where they're I'm assuming on like a dolly of some sort and they're coming through the submarine and they're pulling back and people are running and everything and so everything's moving really quick that was a tad unsettling I was like well that's a lot because it is completely immersive which is which is very cool like if you look up you see more of the sub if you look to the right you can see the gauges and everything water dripping off the gauges is like the detail is great.

Tom Anderson (17m 4s)

But some of that stuff I

Jeff Battersby (17m 5s)

Could you turn around and see what was behind you?

Tom Anderson (17m 7s)

Tried that and you cannot see anything behind you. So it's pretty much 180 maybe 170 give or take

Jeff Battersby (17m 10s)

Okay.

Jeff Battersby (17m 14s)

That would mean they'd have to pay union dues to the cameraman because you'd see him back there.

Tom Anderson (17m 18s)

Hi

Tom Anderson (17m 21s)

Well, let's add some 360 cam or something but

Jeff Battersby (17m 22s)

A camera woman. I'm not a camera person. I'm not trying to be weird.

Tom Anderson (17m 25s)

Right, right the camera operator

Jeff Battersby (17m 28s)

Correct. There you go.

Tom Anderson (17m 29s)

And then there was one where they're in the kitchen and there's some table like a little

Tom Anderson (17m 34s)

Galley there something but there were some plates on a table of some sort

Tom Anderson (17m 38s)

But it was off to the side and what looked and it just did not

Tom Anderson (17m 41s)

Ever become clear and it looked kind of 3d weird and I was like, whoa, that looks weird

Jeff Battersby (17m 47s)

Hmm. Okay.

Tom Anderson (17m 47s)

but easy enough to look away from

Tom Anderson (17m 50s)

But the the story itself it was entertaining

Tom Anderson (17m 54s)

Wasn't anything remarkable

Jeff Battersby (17m 56s)

Could you have done an hour and a half to two hours of it?

Tom Anderson (18m)

Probably so yeah

Jeff Battersby (18m 2s)

Okay, all right.

Tom Anderson (18m 3s)

Because the scenes that were shot

Tom Anderson (18m 6s)

Like all of it and I don't want to denigrate it in any way I thought it was all shot very well and there this is stuff I'm sure they're they're working through ways to do these things and all that but

Tom Anderson (18m 18s)

But some of the scenes though like when you're looking down a hatch into what's below are you looking up?

Tom Anderson (18m 25s)

There's some scenes where there's some water coming in, you know, they get hit with the torpedoes that

Tom Anderson (18m 30s)

I'm not a big water fan. It's spoiler. I don't care

Jeff Battersby (18m 31s)

Spoiled it, Tom!

Tom Anderson (18m 33s)

I've already told people three times skip this chapter. It's 15 minutes.

Tom Anderson (18m 37s)

There's no spoiler. They get hit with a torpedo. That's it.

Tom Anderson (18m 42s)

But some of that was pretty cool.

Tom Anderson (18m 44s)

Like I could see. So here's what I'd like to see.

Tom Anderson (18m 47s)

I'd like to see an immersive like horror movie because I feel that would be intense.

Jeff Battersby (18m 51s)

Eh?

Tom Anderson (18m 52s)

Right. Like the jump scare.

Jeff Battersby (18m 53s)

The jump scares would really be jump scares.

Tom Anderson (18m 55s)

Yeah, because even when like the when the sub gets hit, I was like, oh, crap.

Tom Anderson (19m)

because it was, it was, you know, it's a, it was.

Tom Anderson (19m 3s)

But I think the experience itself though is fantastic and it's what we've been waiting for.

Tom Anderson (19m 10s)

So I think it's very promising.

Tom Anderson (19m 11s)

I think, you know, more keeps coming out and they get better at doing this and the technology evolves.

Tom Anderson (19m 17s)

You know, the future is bright, but yeah, it was fun.

Tom Anderson (19m 20s)

And I'll probably watch it another time or two just to see what I missed because the first time I'm watching it,

Tom Anderson (19m 26s)

I'm trying to see like, okay, well, how far to the right and left can I look up and down, you know, just to check it out.

Tom Anderson (19m 33s)

I'll probably do that a few more times to see what I may have missed.

Jeff Battersby (19m 38s)

Have you been to an IMAX before have you seen anything in an IMAX theater?

Tom Anderson (19m 41s)

I've only watched IMAX and the Vision Pro.

Tom Anderson (19m 43s)

Bye.

Jeff Battersby (19m 45s)

Okay, so you're not gonna be very much help I needed you to go see an IMAX movie in the IMAX theater two-time You're not doing you get it. You get a b-minus on this

Tom Anderson (19m 52s)

So that's okay.

Jeff Battersby (19m 55s)

because you didn't you

Tom Anderson (19m 55s)

That's good for me.

Tom Anderson (19m 58s)

I'll take it.

Jeff Battersby (19m 58s)

Do the whole research good great. Yeah, you sound like a guess

Tom Anderson (20m 1s)

C's get degrees, man.

Tom Anderson (20m 2s)

So yeah, I was wondering about that too, though.

Jeff Battersby (20m 3s)

Same kind of student I was when I was in high school and grade school and all those other places

Jeff Battersby (20m 8s)

It's like yeah, it's October. It's October 25th

Tom Anderson (20m 11s)

Yeah.

Tom Anderson (20m 11s)

I was wondering about that and I did check some of the subreddits and stuff to see if anybody had made any comparisons to the two, but hadn't seen anything yet.

Jeff Battersby (20m 18s)

Yeah, I wonder. I wonder about that. You're not wrong about technology. Um, I think the fact that it is designed to be, you know, the vision pros designed to be so immersive means that, and the ability to look up, I mean, when you think about the actual frame of a film, what you normally see, you know, it's, we'll see that, you know, those goofy guys have moved away from the mic too far, but those goofy guys that, uh, so I could

Tom Anderson (20m 19s)

Yeah.

Jeff Battersby (20m 48s)

see shooters in an L form, not saying you're a loser, Tom, in an L form with, uh, you know, with either the thumb out and they're kind of trying to frame the shot. You think that that's a very limited area, you know, that you're shooting. And now when you think about it, this thing shooting, you can see up, you can look at your feet and see down.

Tom Anderson (20m 59s)

Right

Tom Anderson (21m 2s)

It's tight, yeah

Jeff Battersby (21m 10s)

It's a different, different game and things that normally even would be in the way when your shooting, you know, didn't make a joke about the cameraman.

Jeff Battersby (21m 19s)

Um, but there's all sorts of other stuff, you know,

Jeff Battersby (21m 21s)

there's tripods holding those, you know, hold those cameras or,

Jeff Battersby (21m 25s)

you know, something else.

Jeff Battersby (21m 26s)

There's a lot going, the tennis shoes of the guys in the camera,

Tom Anderson (21m 28s)

Right. (laughs)

Jeff Battersby (21m 29s)

you know, running the camera, you look down, he's got a nice pair of cameras.

Jeff Battersby (21m 35s)

Um, you know, those things I'm sure are technical issues that have never had to be considered and now need to be considered in this particular case.

Tom Anderson (21m 44s)

Yeah, yeah, and there were there were some shots in there where they're

Jeff Battersby (21m 45s)

So, ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.

Tom Anderson (21m 47s)

You know, the scene is in the water and then there are some where they're on top of the water and those were

Tom Anderson (21m 54s)

Wonderful. Like I was like, wow, that is great. So yeah, that's

Tom Anderson (21m 59s)

That was good thumbs up for me

Jeff Battersby (22m)

Cool. So we need James Cameron to come and do

Tom Anderson (22m 2s)

I'll see what I can do

Jeff Battersby (22m 5s)

You're gonna get James Cameron to come on the show. Great. Let's do it

Tom Anderson (22m 7s)

Yeah, yeah

Jeff Battersby (22m 9s)

Hit him up and see I was thinking not James Cameron on the show But James Cameron to do you know another version of the abyss without the aliens at the end that was kind of the you know kind of went off the rails at the end of that movie, but

Tom Anderson (22m 16s)

Yeah.

Jeff Battersby (22m 23s)

You know where you can kind of feel like you're drowning

Jeff Battersby (22m 27s)

It might be, you know, that sense of I'm stuck.

Tom Anderson (22m 27s)

Mm-hmm

Tom Anderson (22m 30s)

Yeah, and there's a bit of that in this and like I say, I'm not a huge water fan and I was like

Jeff Battersby (22m 30s)

You know, completely underwater and see.

Tom Anderson (22m 36s)

Good. Yeah, so it was it was fun

Jeff Battersby (22m 36s)

Really.

Jeff Battersby (22m 37s)

Okay.

Jeff Battersby (22m 38s)

So, so it's working is what you're saying.

Tom Anderson (22m 40s)

Yeah, so I'd like to see also I want to see how there's you know There are other films that are out that are on quest and stuff that people have made I don't want to see people that have both to compare the two

Tom Anderson (22m 51s)

Because like I say, this is my first

Tom Anderson (22m 53s)

Go around with it. You know any of your stuff. So that's what I want to see is

Jeff Battersby (22m 54s)

Mm-hmm

Jeff Battersby (22m 56s)

Cool

Tom Anderson (22m 57s)

how people have had some more experience to kind of compare the two and see how it shapes up. Mine's kind of just one-sided but...

Jeff Battersby (23m 2s)

Yeah, well I appreciate you taking the time to watch a movie even if it was only a 15-minute movie

Tom Anderson (23m 6s)

Bye.

Jeff Battersby (23m 11s)

No, that's not a thing that you would normally do but I appreciate you taking the time to

Jeff Battersby (23m 15s)

To do it and I I'm intrigued

Jeff Battersby (23m 18s)

You know, maybe I'll go to the Apple Store and hold myself up in a corner and watch the movie They probably won't let me do it because they--

Jeff Battersby (23m 24s)

want me to buy a Vision Pro.

Jeff Battersby (23m 26s)

So maybe I'll just come down to your house and watch.

Tom Anderson (23m 30s)

Doors always open.

Jeff Battersby (23m 32s)

I appreciate that.

Jeff Battersby (23m 33s)

It's a little bit of a drive.

Tom Anderson (23m 34s)

Well, leave early, you'll get here.

Jeff Battersby (23m 34s)

But yeah, leave early and get home late.

Tom Anderson (23m 41s)

Well, you can stay the night.

Jeff Battersby (23m 42s)

Oh, thanks.

Jeff Battersby (23m 44s)

That's kind of you.

Jeff Battersby (23m 45s)

I appreciate it.

Jeff Battersby (23m 47s)

All right, cool.

Jeff Battersby (23m 49s)

Yeah, I'm excited to hear what more people have to say about it.

Jeff Battersby (23m 52s)

You know me, I am very much.

Jeff Battersby (23m 54s)

A movie and a TV guy, um, those are, those are things that I'm interested in and the immersive quality of that would be, would be interesting to me.

Jeff Battersby (24m 3s)

I'm not a big IMAX guy.

Jeff Battersby (24m 4s)

I will say that I I've seen maybe two movies in the IMAX.

Jeff Battersby (24m 9s)

Um, I think Coraline might've been one of them in 3d at the IMAX, which was amazing.

Jeff Battersby (24m 16s)

Um, but I, I don't think that's, that's not a thing that I've done.

Jeff Battersby (24m 21s)

you know, first of all, the nearest IMAX is like.

Jeff Battersby (24m 24s)

Too far away.

Tom Anderson (24m 25s)

Oh something I didn't like and I forgot to say it and we're gonna go quick so we got something else to talk about but one thing and this is true with all of the immersive stuff that I've seen you know when you get a tv like you get a new tv and you go home and you set it up and you're like

Jeff Battersby (24m 25s)

Uh, what's Oh.

Jeff Battersby (24m 38s)

Yes. Yes. Yes. Immediately. Right.

Tom Anderson (24m 39s)

it doesn't look natural and it's got that motion smoothing stuff turned on or the soap opera effect as they call it and then I usually go and turn that crap off and like oh that's much better

Tom Anderson (24m 48s)

yeah these have that kind of feel they do and I think

Tom Anderson (24m 55s)

it may just be inherent into the way that they have to be shot because they're kind of 3d type stuff you know they're not like traditional film shooting um and I'm not a big fan of that

Tom Anderson (25m 9s)

and once you get over I mean it wasn't a big detriment like it didn't say oh god I hate it it's this again like it's better than what you get on a tv when it's got that stuff turned on but it feels similar to that to me the rest

Jeff Battersby (25m 10s)

Yeah, I don't

Jeff Battersby (25m 22s)

If it had any of that, I wouldn't.

Tom Anderson (25m 25s)

of it kind of balances it out and it's like okay I'm not crazy about that but because you get all this other stuff you know with the immersive capabilities it's like I'll tolerate it yeah so anyway on to the next okay oh oh my gosh

Jeff Battersby (25m 33s)

got it. Interesting. Okay. All right. All right, Tom. Here's the next. Hang on. I've got sound effects. I've got sound effects, Tom. It's really exciting. This is so cool.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Jeff Battersby (25m 44s)

Ready? Here we go. People will know what this is. Ready? One, two. You can hear that. And do you hear this? Let me turn the volume up. Tom, I, you know, you know that not too long ago. Here we go. There's the sound. Not too long ago.

Jeff Battersby (26m 4s)

For my birthday, I was given a Nintendo Switch. And what you're listening to me play right now, which I won't play for too long so we don't get in trouble with the gods of Nintendo.

Tom Anderson (26m 13s)

Copyright. Right.

Jeff Battersby (26m 13s)

Right. So I'm turning it off like a good boy. There it is. It's off. No, I almost, I almost missed recording because I was sitting down playing Legend of Zelda. Not going to remember the name heroes of uh heroes of the...

Tom Anderson (26m 17s)

And plus you couldn't stay focused on two things at once, so you gotta put it away.

Jeff Battersby (26m 33s)

Kingdom. There we go. Good God. Don't put put pressure on me to remember anything. Um, I am a uh, I will say I'm a young gamer. I did play, you know, the usual stuff that we had when we were kids like, you know, Space Invaders and those kinds of things and then didn't really... I played a little bit of Warcraft, not World of Warcraft, but the original Warcraft. I played that for a while.

Tom Anderson (26m 56s)

Mm-hmm. Yep.

Jeff Battersby (26m 58s)

I played Doom when my eldest daughter...

Jeff Battersby (27m 3s)

was a baby, and that was not a good choice, man.

Jeff Battersby (27m 8s)

I thought people were coming behind me from the back of the house.

Jeff Battersby (27m 12s)

That was not a good, you know,

Jeff Battersby (27m 15s)

as I planted it at probably 11.30, 12 o'clock at night.

Jeff Battersby (27m 19s)

And I've played a couple of other games that I've really loved.

Jeff Battersby (27m 21s)

I wanna tell you, this is probably the first time with any game that I've played where it's like,

Jeff Battersby (27m 30s)

I really just wanna go do this a little more.

Jeff Battersby (27m 33s)

It's pretty straightforward.

Jeff Battersby (27m 34s)

It's a different kind of "Legend of Zelda" game.

Jeff Battersby (27m 39s)

In "Legend of Zelda," for anybody who's played those games,

Jeff Battersby (27m 41s)

you know that you've played the game as Link,

Jeff Battersby (27m 44s)

who is a character who's supposed to save Princess Zelda.

Jeff Battersby (27m 49s)

Link shows up at the beginning of this game and then disappears, and you play as Zelda.

Jeff Battersby (27m 56s)

So you play as the princess,

Jeff Battersby (27m 58s)

who's kind of running around in incognito mode.

Jeff Battersby (28m 1s)

She wears little hoods, so nobody knows who--

Jeff Battersby (28m 3s)

who she is, or nobody knows that she's the princess.

Jeff Battersby (28m 6s)

But it's a different kind of puzzle game.

Jeff Battersby (28m 8s)

It's not just battling people with swords.

Jeff Battersby (28m 12s)

What she has is a little wand that allows her to learn about different characters that you've defeated, and then use those characters to be able to do things.

Jeff Battersby (28m 25s)

Sometimes those characters are actual characters,

Jeff Battersby (28m 28s)

like orc-looking dudes that have swords, or boomerangs, or--

Jeff Battersby (28m 33s)

things of that nature.

Jeff Battersby (28m 34s)

But the other piece of it is you collect beds, and trampolines,

Jeff Battersby (28m 38s)

and all these other things, and you have to puzzle your way around to solving--

Jeff Battersby (28m 45s)

you have to basically work out logical ways to be able to solve various puzzles.

Jeff Battersby (28m 50s)

For example, you may be stuck down in a pit,

Jeff Battersby (28m 54s)

and the only way to get out of the pit is to use a spider who spins a web that you can then jump on and climb up out of that pit and leap over to another place.

Jeff Battersby (29m 3s)

So it's really cleverly put together.

Jeff Battersby (29m 6s)

And I've tried playing some other Zelda games,

Jeff Battersby (29m 10s)

and because, like I said, I'm a rookie,

Jeff Battersby (29m 13s)

I've had trouble getting past the first level.

Jeff Battersby (29m 18s)

That's me.

Jeff Battersby (29m 19s)

And I'll reattempt it and sometimes discover things I haven't discovered before.

Jeff Battersby (29m 22s)

But this game is really--

Jeff Battersby (29m 24s)

it's challenging, and it is interesting,

Jeff Battersby (29m 29s)

And it has a creative element to it.

Jeff Battersby (29m 33s)

That I gonna say, I've not really experienced in a lot of other games.

Jeff Battersby (29m 38s)

You know, many games are, you know, run, run, run, run, run, collect a couple of little things and then beat the crap out of somebody.

Jeff Battersby (29m 45s)

And then, you know, when you finally beat the crap out of somebody and, and when you collect some extra bonus points and you go up to the next level and you have to beat a bigger person, those things do happen here, but the way that the puzzles are designed.

Jeff Battersby (29m 58s)

For example, right before you made me have to come in here and do this podcast.

Jeff Battersby (30m 4s)

I set a crow flying and then I could attach myself to the crow and let the crow carry me up as it was flying to another location where I could pick up some other little bonus points and pieces.

Jeff Battersby (30m 17s)

So figuring out how it is that you get to all the goodies, how it is that you beat, you know, some big, scary character, all that has really been fun.

Jeff Battersby (30m 29s)

And I texted you the other, the other day when I started playing this game.

Jeff Battersby (30m 33s)

a week and a half, maybe two weeks.

Tom Anderson (30m 35s)

OK, so it's new brand new.

Jeff Battersby (30m 37s)

It is brand new game.

Jeff Battersby (30m 38s)

Yeah.

Jeff Battersby (30m 38s)

Brand new game.

Tom Anderson (30m 39s)

OK.

Jeff Battersby (30m 39s)

And I, I sent you a message and I said, we have to talk about this.

Jeff Battersby (30m 44s)

And it, it's really been one of those, those things where I enjoy myself, you know, I'm watching the playoffs too.

Jeff Battersby (30m 51s)

And you know, it's one of those things where, you know, baseball's a game where you can, and football is kind of too, it's like, Oh, I don't have to look at the TV right now because you know, they're huddling and they're getting

Tom Anderson (31m 3s)

Right. Yep.

Jeff Battersby (31m 3s)

This is a, this is a game where I can play while I'm doing that and kind of take my eyes off it for a couple of seconds and, and then go back to the,

Jeff Battersby (31m 12s)

you know, to watch the football game and then go back to the, this game.

Jeff Battersby (31m 15s)

I, I will say also, it's a simpler design than some of the other ones.

Jeff Battersby (31m 21s)

Um, I'm going to say simpler design.

Jeff Battersby (31m 24s)

The character, uh, is kind of small elf, like cute.

Jeff Battersby (31m 30s)

So you're, you're kind of having fun playing with that character.

Jeff Battersby (31m 33s)

It's really realistic in terms of what it looks like.

Jeff Battersby (31m 36s)

The color palette is gorgeous.

Jeff Battersby (31m 37s)

Like it's really kind of fun.

Jeff Battersby (31m 39s)

I'm in a desert section right now, uh, that has quicksand and has some hot sand,

Jeff Battersby (31m 44s)

has some other things that, that are there.

Jeff Battersby (31m 46s)

And, uh, all that to say, if you have a Nintendo switch, uh, I would highly recommend getting this game.

Jeff Battersby (31m 55s)

It's a lot of fun.

Jeff Battersby (31m 57s)

Um, for me anyway, uh, maybe not for you, but for me, it's just been a real delight.

Tom Anderson (32m 3s)

Somebody else said that. You mentioned that on threads the other day and somebody replied that they were enjoying it too, but I can't remember who it was.

Jeff Battersby (32m 3s)

Um, I think it was Chris Freitag or it was, who was it?

Jeff Battersby (32m 15s)

Um, I think it was Adam.

Jeff Battersby (32m 16s)

Yeah, actually it was Adam.

Jeff Battersby (32m 18s)

Adam said he was really enjoying it.

Jeff Battersby (32m 19s)

Um, so yeah, it's a, it's a super fun game.

Tom Anderson (32m 25s)

Nice.

Jeff Battersby (32m 26s)

All right.

Jeff Battersby (32m 27s)

Oh, you know, one other thing unrelated.

More Focus Modes: Reduce Interruptions

Jeff Battersby (32m 29s)

We'll, we'll jump back to the, the Mac iOS, iOS stuff.

Jeff Battersby (32m 34s)

One of the features I'm using it right now, uh, there's a new focus feature

Jeff Battersby (32m 41s)

that uses Apple intelligence built into, uh, built into the OS and it's called reduce interruptions.

Jeff Battersby (32m 51s)

Um, you said when we were talking pre-show that you don't know how it's really different than do not disturb.

Jeff Battersby (32m 56s)

Other than it's supposed to, I think, be able to let, uh, let some noise through in the event.

Jeff Battersby (33m 1s)

You know, like if there's--

Tom Anderson (33m 4s)

In focus modes, you can go in and specify.

Tom Anderson (33m 7s)

So like, if I go into do not disturb,

Tom Anderson (33m 10s)

I can go in and say, yes, it's do not disturb,

Tom Anderson (33m 12s)

but always allow stuff from these six people come through in these two apps.

Tom Anderson (33m 16s)

And I can set a schedule for it.

Tom Anderson (33m 18s)

And so you can have different ones of those.

Tom Anderson (33m 19s)

Maybe you're on a vacation mode,

Tom Anderson (33m 20s)

you don't want any work stuff to come through,

Tom Anderson (33m 22s)

but just your family and friends, that kind of stuff.

Tom Anderson (33m 25s)

And I wanna say, and you can still do that with this one.

Tom Anderson (33m 28s)

Like I noticed in the settings,

Tom Anderson (33m 29s)

you can add things to it,

Tom Anderson (33m 30s)

but I feel like, and I have to go back and look,

Tom Anderson (33m 31s)

'cause I just stumbled upon it the other day.

Tom Anderson (33m 35s)

I wanna learn some more on it,

Tom Anderson (33m 36s)

but I feel like it said using Apple intelligence,

Tom Anderson (33m 40s)

it will learn kind of like the habits that you want it to exhibit to say,

Tom Anderson (33m 44s)

yes, I should get these couple of people and not this stupid notification that there's a sale at Banana Republic or something.

Tom Anderson (33m 53s)

I don't care about that.

Tom Anderson (33m 55s)

So yeah, I don't have that in front of me.

Tom Anderson (33m 58s)

I think what we'll do is once this stuff comes out,

Tom Anderson (34m)

like out of beta, we'll dig into it a bit more.

Jeff Battersby (34m 2s)

Yeah. Yeah. I will tell you that it blocks. I'm looking right now at messages and even my family has not sent me messages. And usually that stuff will come through, you know, even in the recording session that I have. And in the recording session, the only one I'm supposed to be getting messages from is you. That's how I have it set up. You know, that's You should be, but I--

Tom Anderson (34m 29s)

I'm honored.

Jeff Battersby (34m 32s)

I will tell you that, right now, in this new version,

Jeff Battersby (34m 37s)

the one that's using Apple Intelligence,

Jeff Battersby (34m 39s)

it is pretty much-- and for good reason.

Jeff Battersby (34m 41s)

I mean, I got probably, I don't know, 15 or 20 pictures.

Jeff Battersby (34m 47s)

People are sending me pictures of the Northern Lights, which apparently, I'm wasting my time here with you when I could be outside watching the Northern Lights, which I may do right after this.

Tom Anderson (34m 54s)

"Intelligent breakthrough and silencing". There you go.

Jeff Battersby (34m 58s)

Yeah, so maybe it only sends the people that you love.

Tom Anderson (35m 1s)

Right. That's why you get them from me.

Jeff Battersby (35m 3s)

Um, yes.

Tom Anderson (35m 6s)

Yes. Yeah. But yeah, we'll dig into that some more once, uh, once we're out of the betas.

Jeff Battersby (35m 13s)

Tom, we've done it again. Yeah, I think so. 30 under 40 minutes. We've wasted under 40 minutes of your time. And we're grateful for every one of those 40 minutes that you've decided to spend with us. As we've said, we have kind of hit a threshold that we're maintaining.

Close

Tom Anderson (35m 14s)

All right. Are we done? Excellent.

Jeff Battersby (35m 31s)

So a number of downloads, a number of listeners, and we're very, very grateful to you for that.

Jeff Battersby (35m 38s)

As a reminder, show music, psychokinetics.

Jeff Battersby (35m 43s)

and

Tom Anderson (36m 3s)

Excellent. All right. Well, thanks everybody for being here.

Tom Anderson (36m 6s)

Until the next time, have a great day,

Tom Anderson (36m 8s)

a great evening, and we will see you then.

Jeff Battersby (36m 12s)

See ya
