Benjamin's Recommendations

Overall: Apple TV is boutique television and movies; that one sparsely population community movie theatre that shows nothing but quality 90% of the time, and puts real butter on the popcorn.

TV Shows

For All Mankind ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Solid storytelling, very very accurate science, movie level special effects

Foundation ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Bold interpretation of Asimov's novels, with a better cohesive story. The best adaptation of any Asimov work yet.  Guided by Robyn Asimov, his daughter.

Invasion ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Entertaining and nail biting, which interwoven stories

Severance ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Deserves 2 watches. Well done sets. Feels like an expanded short story. Very Tales from the Loop

Hello Tomorrow! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Feels like a 50s sci-fi novel brought to life

Silo ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • The best of sets, acting, storyline, special effects, and serialization Apple TV has done to date. The Season 2 finale will rock everything you thought was true.

Hijack ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Elba's brilliant acting coupled with twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat

The Changeling ⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • A bit too disturbing for me, but a solidly engaging series.

Lessons in Chemistry ⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Sweet and surprising. Come for the science. Stay for the romance.

Masters of the Air ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • One of the most beautiful and cutting interpretations of WWII pilots I've ever seen. Period-accurate perfection, with special effects you could tell Spielberg was waiting for.

The Problem with John Stewart ⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Solid long-form replacement for the Daily Show

Upcoming

  • Wycaro 399 - Vince Gilligan Scifi
  • Neuromancer - Cyberpunk Drama
  • Speed Racer - Cartoon Adaptation
  • Star City - Alt History

Movies

Greyhound ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Tom Hanks captains a warship in WWII, based on true events

Finch ⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Tom Hanks has a Robot.

Swan Song ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Psychological Romantic Sci-fi. Like an expanded Black Mirror episode, but harder hitting.

Luck ⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Solid, entertaining, first foray into animation.

Spirited ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • A self aware Christmas movie where Will Ferrel and Ryan Reynolds fight for who is funniest on screen.

Emancipation ⭐️

  • Only threw this on here to point out that they CAN make mistakes

Killers of the Flower Moon ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • A bitingly difficult film to watch, but one that is hard to turn away from. Brilliant performances from Lily Gladstone, Robert DeNiro, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Ought to be required viewing in history classes.

Napoleon ⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Beautiful and high budget, ruined only by odd accent choices.

Wolfs ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Brad Pitt and George Clooney clearly are having fun in this, and only did it because they love doing it. A joy to watch.

Blitz ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Beautifully shot WWII film from a child’s perspective. It feels like you’re settling in for a Narnia or Harry Potter style tale, and then continues to be far more real than you would expect.

Still ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • I’ve never seen a better shot biopic. Answers the question “Whatever happened to Michael J. Fox?” in stark detail.

Velveteen Rabbit ⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Beautiful adaptation of the children’s book that does not feel rushed or contrived.

Blush ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  • Short. Cute. 10 minutes of sci-fi animation.
